In 1763 Gennai Hiraga (1728-1779) authored a catalog of the items shown at a Pharmaceutical Exhibition. It included one volume with thirty-four woodblock-printed pictures of medicinal plants. These pictures are shown here. Click on a picture to enlarge it. Pictures were drawn by Shiseki Sō (1712-1786) who was a well-known Nagasaki-style artist. Shiseki drew the shapes of his picture subjects accurately but he only colored them in shades of gray.
